A cuppa, my way
Michelle at the Daily Post asks us to show a “habit” this week.
My daily indulgence is a steaming cup of masala chai.
Orangey-brown in colour, with a bit of milk and just the right amount of sugar to enhance the flavours of all the spices and herbs.
Just a whiff of the spicy aroma is enough to lift my spirits.
The first sip – and the cobwebs clear, the eyes start focusing better and the world is a better place to be in.
The perfect way to energize in the mornings, or re-energize, if you must, in the evening.
If all you’ve had so far is the “chai tea” concoction offered in most coffee shops around the world… You really haven’t tasted Indian style masala chai.
Uh-huh. No siree.
Ready to try for yourself? Here is my mom’s recipe for the perfect cuppa…
– Roughly crush 1 cardamom, a very small piece of cinnamon (or use a pinch of powdered cinnamon) and a small piece of ginger. Tear up 4-5 leaves of tulsi (holy basil).
– Add these to a mixture of one cup of water and 1/4th cup of milk and bring to a boil. Then turn to simmer for 2 minutes.
– Add 1 teaspoon of black tea and turn off the heat. Cover and let this rest for 2 minutes.
– Then, add 1 teaspoon of sugar (Yes, you NEED the sugar. It is totally worth the 10-20 additional calories.)
– Bring the mixture to a boil again, long enough for the sugar to dissolve.
– Strain and serve piping hot 🙂
