A city without a soul?

Shallow glitz

Today’s post is not on a happy note.

Because of this piece of news, which many of you may have read.

I’m shocked, disappointed and angry as hell.

Of course every country has their own laws & regulations, and I’m all about following those and respecting local culture and religious sensitivities.

But really, no conviction for rape unless there is a confession or four adult male witnesses? And while we are at it, let’s convict the victim for breaking a law (who cares it may have been committed against her will!)?

With a McDonalds, Tim Hortons and Boots in every block, and foreigners constituting a majority of the population, externally Dubai is very much the picture of a modern, cosmopolitan city. It is all about retail therapy, fine dining and partying (complete with elitist night clubs to enter which you need to either be willing to spend thousands of dollars to reserve a table, or be a skimpily dressed, preferably Caucasian woman).

Glitzy advertising… but important to read the fine print, I guess.

P.S. Thankfully the victim was just “pardoned”. But that doesn’t change the law. Just puts you at the mercy of another man.
